Plan the Fireplace Before You Choose the Brick
Compare site-built masonry with modular systems, verify codes and materials, and budget the foundation, freight, permits, labor and finishes.

Before buying brick or ordering a kit, confirm that a wood-burning outdoor brick fireplace is allowed on the property and that the proposed location can meet local setbacks and clearances. Then document the foundation, firebox, chimney, hearth, and finish as one compatible system; compare site-built masonry with outdoor-rated modular options; price the complete installation; and identify the required inspections and operating restrictions.
This is planning guidance, not a brick-by-brick construction procedure or a substitute for approved plans, product instructions, permits, and inspections.
Start here: a seven-step planning sequence
Use this sequence to keep appearance from getting ahead of feasibility:
- Verify local feasibility. Contact the building, zoning, fire, and air-quality authorities that govern the property.
- Screen the site. Identify nearby structures, vegetation, openings, property boundaries, overhead features, seating, and traffic routes.
- Choose the construction path. Decide between a site-built masonry fireplace and an outdoor-rated modular system.
- Establish the opening and hearth dimensions. These affect the firebox, foundation footprint, seating layout, and surrounding patio.
- Verify materials and documentation. Match the firebox materials, chimney design, exterior brick, and installation details to approved plans or the exact product instructions.
- Build the complete budget. Include excavation, foundation work, freight, permits, labor, chimney components, finish materials, and site restoration.
- Complete required approvals. Follow the permit’s inspection sequence and do not operate the fireplace before any required final approval.
Ask officials which code edition has been adopted, whether local amendments apply, what permits are required, and which zoning or fire-code provisions control the site. Requirements can differ among municipalities, counties, states, tribal jurisdictions, fire districts, and air-quality districts.
Keep two questions separate:
- Permission to construct concerns the structure, location, materials, and installation.
- Permission to burn depends on current fire conditions, air-quality rules, and operating restrictions.
An inspected fireplace may still be unusable during a burn ban or air-quality alert. EPA’s archived examples show that some jurisdictions temporarily restrict or prohibit outdoor wood burning, but they are not a current summary of every locality’s law (EPA examples of wood-burning ordinances and restrictions).
Decide what kind of brick fireplace you are planning
“Outdoor brick fireplace” often describes the finished appearance rather than the underlying construction. The project may be:
- Built onsite from structural masonry.
- Built around a modular masonry core and finished with separately selected brick.
- Photographed in a brick-paved setting even though the fireplace itself is stone or concrete.
Do not identify the construction method from a photograph alone. Brick may carry structural loads, act as a facing material, serve as a thin veneer, or belong only to the patio.
The opening, chimney massing, niches, adjoining walls, hearth, and brick patterns can be designed together. That does not make it automatically safer, cheaper, or more durable; those outcomes depend on the design, materials, workmanship, exposure, and maintenance.
A modular system can standardize parts of the core and provide model-specific drawings. Package contents vary, however. One retailer says its masonry kits can include firebrick, mortar, and a damper (Woodland Direct masonry-kit catalog). Another seller lists exterior veneer as a separate selection rather than part of its starting price (Stonewood outdoor fireplace kits).
These tables provide a direct comparison without assuming that either path is best for every property.

A “masonry” or “outdoor” label does not prove that a particular model can accept brick veneer. Verify the exact model’s outdoor approval, intended fuel, listing conditions, dimensions, chimney requirements, included parts, compatible finishes, and current installation instructions.
Likewise, a manufacturer’s description of a system as suitable for DIY assembly is not a universal conclusion about the homeowner or site. Foundation support, chimney performance, clearances, covered structures, and inspection requirements may still call for qualified project-specific help.
Screen the location before designing the fireplace
Start with a scaled site plan rather than a catalog image. Mark the proposed fireplace footprint and review:
- House walls, roof edges, decks, and attached structures
- Fences and property lines
- Trees, shrubs, mulch, and other potentially combustible landscaping
- Pergolas, gazebos, awnings, roofs, and overhead branches
- Doors, windows, vents, and air intakes
- Seating and dining areas
- Walkways, gates, play areas, and service routes
- Neighboring buildings, yards, and occupied spaces
- The full hearth extension and operating area
- Access for excavation, materials, lifting equipment, and inspections
Manufacturer planning guidance supports keeping outdoor fireplaces away from potentially flammable vegetation while directing homeowners to local fire and building requirements (Mason-Lite outdoor masonry planning guidance). It does not establish a universal safe distance.
This guidance therefore provides no generic setback from a house, fence, tree, property line, or pergola. Obtain the zoning setbacks and fire clearances applicable to the property. Model-code clearances between a masonry fireplace and combustible construction are not substitutes for property setbacks or vegetation-management rules.
An open or latticed pergola does not automatically make installation beneath or beside it acceptable. Posts, beams, shade coverings, roofing, furnishings, and the chimney’s relationship to the structure all require project-specific review. Treat a covered or partially covered arrangement as unresolved until accepted by the code official and the appropriate designer, contractor, or manufacturer.
Consider smoke movement as well. Look at doors, windows, seating, nearby rooflines, air intakes, neighboring yards, and areas where smoke might collect. Prevailing-wind observations can reveal an obvious conflict, but they cannot replace project-specific chimney and draft design.
Coordinate the fireplace with seating, walls, lighting, landscaping, an outdoor kitchen, or a pergola only after the compliant footprint, hearth extension, clearances, and operating area have been established.
Use model-code dimensions as a planning check, not a permit drawing
The following figures come from the displayed historical 2024 International Residential Code provisions for masonry fireplaces. They are useful for discussions with the mason and code official, but they do not establish what is enforceable at a particular address. Local adoption, amendments, exceptions, project classification, and official interpretation control (2024 IRC Chapter 10 masonry-fireplace provisions).

Opening size is an early planning decision, not a decorative choice to make after laying the patio.
Do not use this table to select chimney height, flue area, drainage details, structural reinforcement, or weatherproofing. Those elements depend on the complete design, local requirements, site exposure, and exact product instructions where applicable.
Separate the firebox materials from the visible brick finish
An outdoor brick fireplace contains materials with different jobs:
- Structural masonry carries fireplace and chimney loads.
- Firebrick forms or lines high-temperature firebox surfaces.
- Refractory mortar is used where the approved high-heat assembly requires it.
- Exterior face brick provides the visible finish and may or may not be structural.
- Thin brick veneer is a finish attached over an approved substrate.
These materials are not interchangeable. The cited model-code provisions distinguish between an approved lined firebox and thicker unlined masonry. They also limit firebrick joints to 1/4 inch and reference specified firebrick and refractory-mortar standards. Ordinary exterior brick and standard mortar should not be assumed suitable for the firebox.
For a site-built fireplace, the drawings and specifications should identify every layer and its purpose. For a modular system, the exact manual or written manufacturer confirmation should address:
- Whether brick is an approved finish
- Whether full-depth or thin brick is intended
- The permitted attachment method
- Required clearances and air spaces
- Support for the finish weight
- Details that accommodate movement
- Transitions around the opening, hearth, and chimney
Resolve these details for the actual climate and assembly rather than copying a generic detail from another model or region.
Build the budget around the installed project, not the kit price
Available listings provide product-price snapshots, not a reliable national installed-cost range.
Stone Age listed its Veranda outdoor fireplace at $2,907, excluding taxes and shipping, and marked it out of stock (Stone Age Veranda listing).
Stonewood advertised outdoor fireplace kits from $3,149, with exterior veneer selected separately. Selected Isokern examples in the Woodland Direct catalog displayed starting prices from $3,257 to $10,608. These are not equivalent products; their sizes, components, finishes, certifications, chimney requirements, and availability differ.
Use a worksheet that captures the complete project:

Ask each bidder for a written scope listing inclusions, exclusions, allowances, and change-order rates. For a kit, require the model number, dimensions, current manual, finish system, additional required components, and delivery terms. The contract should identify who obtains permits, schedules inspections, corrects rejected work, and supplies final documentation.
Do not assume a modular kit will save money or labor. Its practical value may be standardized core components and model-specific documentation, but total complexity depends on the site and the package contents.
Plan for smoke rules and responsible operation
Construction approval is not standing permission to burn. As the EPA examples cited earlier show, state, local, tribal, fire, and air-quality authorities may impose temporary or permanent restrictions. Check current notices from the relevant fire authority, health department, air-quality agency, or state agency before lighting the fireplace.
Plan a conventional outdoor masonry fireplace primarily as an ambiance feature, not as an efficient space-heating appliance. EPA’s archived Burn Wise FAQ says conventional fireplaces generally burn less cleanly than EPA-certified wood stoves and lose much of their heat through the chimney. It also says conventional fireplaces and masonry heaters are not EPA-certified (EPA questions about wood-burning appliances).
EPA certification and building approval address different matters. A conventional masonry fireplace’s lack of EPA certification does not determine whether local building officials will approve it, while a building permit does not override burn bans or air-quality restrictions.
For cleaner, more responsible operation:
- Burn clean, dry, seasoned wood.
- Build small, hot fires instead of smoky, smoldering fires.
- Do not burn when outdoor air quality is poor or a restriction is active.
- Maintain the fireplace and chimney.
- Stop using the fireplace and investigate if smoke persistently spills into occupied areas or affects neighboring properties.
Archived EPA guidance supports those operating practices and says not to burn garbage, plastics, rubber, petroleum products, paints, solvents, treated wood, charcoal, or coal in a residential wood-burning appliance (EPA archived wood-burning guidance). That page is no longer updated, and the Burn Wise material has served as a historical record since EPA stopped updating the program in 2025. Use current local agencies for present-day rules and alerts.
Use a go/no-go checklist before signing a contract
Require written answers to these questions:

- [ ] Who is responsible for footing design, including soil, frost, drainage, loads, and seismic conditions?
- [ ] What are the approved fireplace-opening and hearth dimensions?
- [ ] Who has designed or verified the chimney and flue?
- [ ] Is the exact model approved for outdoor use and the intended fuel?
- [ ] Does its documentation permit the proposed brick or veneer system?
- [ ] Are finish attachment, support, clearance, and movement details documented?
- [ ] Who obtains the permit and schedules each inspection?
- [ ] Which stages must remain exposed for inspection?
- [ ] Does the contract identify all included and excluded materials and labor?
- [ ] Are freight, equipment access, taxes, restoration, and change orders covered?
- [ ] Which operating restrictions and burn-alert sources apply after approval?
Make the project a no-go if the seller cannot document that the exact kit is suitable for the proposed outdoor location, fuel, finish, and installation arrangement. It is also a no-go while setbacks, foundation requirements, chimney design, or covered-structure clearances remain unresolved.
Depending on the unresolved issues, consult the local code official and an appropriately qualified mason, designer, engineer, chimney professional, contractor, or manufacturer. Not every project needs every professional, but every responsibility needs a named party and appropriate documentation.
Product instructions supplement locally adopted codes, permits, and inspections; they do not replace them. Do not buy brick or a fireplace kit until the location, local rules, construction path, opening dimensions, foundation, chimney design, finish compatibility, and complete installed scope are documented. A visually simple outdoor fireplace remains a code-governed masonry and combustion project—and permission to build remains separate from permission to burn.
