Obtain the current manual for the exact manufacturer and model before paying a deposit. Reject any proposal that applies wood-insert venting rules to a pellet unit, assumes every gas insert uses the same vent arrangement, or treats the presence of a nearby receptacle as installation approval for an electric model.

Photograph the complete fireplace, hearth, damper area, chimney exterior, mantel, nearby walls, and any rating plate or identifying label. Do not remove permanent components merely to search for it.

Liner insulation can help the flue warm more quickly, improve draft, and reduce condensation, particularly in an exterior chimney. A bidder should identify the exact insulation product and the instruction or listing that requires—or permits omitting—it.
A flexible liner may sometimes be ovalized through a restrictive damper area. Ovalizing reduces its cross-sectional area, so the liner manufacturer must approve the resulting dimensions, routing, and connection method. It is not a substitute for correct liner sizing.
Compare specifications without mistaking maximums for real-world performance
Once compatibility appears plausible, compare the figures that describe each appliance and its tested operation:
- Firebox volume: Indicates fuel capacity but does not predict delivered heat by itself.

Advertised heating area is also conditional. Climate, insulation, air leakage, ceiling height, floor plan, appliance location, fuel moisture, firing rate, and chimney draft can change the result. The Enerzone figures apply specifically to Solution 1.7-I model EB00057. Its manual also identifies dry cordwood, a 1.9-cubic-foot nominal firebox, an 18-inch maximum log length when loaded east-west, a blower rated up to 144 CFM, model-specific clearances, and no approval for mobile-home installation.
The Quadra-Fire figures apply specifically to the 2700-I ACC. Its manual describes approximately 14–16 feet, measured from the appliance base, as an ideal chimney height for that model. That statement, its clearances, and its draft guidance must not be transferred to another insert.
Neither example is a recommendation or evidence that the appliance fits a particular fireplace.
Verify certification, listing and installation requirements
For a new wood insert, verify EPA certification by exact model:
- Record the complete manufacturer and model designation from the rating plate and current manual.
- Search the EPA Certified Wood Heater Database.
- Use the exact model rather than a shortened retailer title.
- Review the heater type, fuel, emissions rate, and available efficiency information.

A retailer badge or similar model name is not enough.
EPA certification addresses applicable emissions compliance. It does not establish dimensional fit, chimney integrity, safe clearances, heating capacity, or local installation approval.
Verify the separate appliance safety listing as well. Record the exact model and listing agency shown on the rating plate or manual, then ask the dealer or installer to document that the listing permits the proposed application—especially when the existing fireplace is factory-built. The current appliance manual, liner instructions, permit documents, and final approval should all describe the same installation.
Permits and inspections vary by jurisdiction. A qualified fireplace or chimney professional is a sensible choice for evaluating a combustion-insert project, although local law determines whether specific credentials or professional installation are mandatory.
Ask prospective installers:

- Have you installed this exact model or its current product family?
- Who obtains permits and schedules inspections?
- What did the chimney inspection find?
- How were the liner diameter, alloy, and routing selected?
- Is insulation required, and which listing or instruction controls that decision?
- Are draft or combustion-air problems likely in this house?
- Who completes startup, testing, and owner instruction?
- What documents will I receive for inspection and warranty purposes?
Draft is a whole-system issue. Tight construction and exhaust equipment such as kitchen hoods, bath fans, and clothes dryers can contribute to negative indoor pressure. Wind, outdoor temperature, chimney location, height, bends, and flue temperature also affect performance. A tall chimney is not automatically a good-drafting chimney.
